Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
