Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
